Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg Establishes Checkpoint to Defend White Lake from Illegal Fishing
Pic Mobert, ON – Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg (NN) has established a community checkpoint and patrols to defend the precious waters of White Lake against illegal fishing activities during the spring walleye spawn.
Poaching and unstainable fishing practices, such as netting in spawn areas, has increased in recent years without adequate enforcement on White Lake. To help protect this vital ecosystem, NN community members have proactively taken on patrols and established volunteer checkpoints at lake access points.
These actions follow similar efforts in 2024, and aim to track, monitor, and deter illegal fishing activities, safeguarding the lake's future for all lawful users.
